For the past 16 years, the Junior League of Longview has been engineering the annual School Supply Train. Joined in 1997 by Buckner Children and Family Services, the program has expanded each year to serve additional students, and this year is no exception.
Supplies will be distributed August 15th and 16th to 4,000 low-income children in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Parents may pick up the school supplies at “the ROC” (Recreational Outreach Center) of FBC Longview, located at the corner of South and Fredonia Streets in downtown Longview. Hours on Friday, August 15th from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday, August 16th from 8:00 am to 11:00noon. Parents must bring ID for themselves, proof of school enrollment for each child (report card or schedule), and proof of the family’s household income, such as a pay stub or letter stating all benefits received.
The Junior League of Longview, Buckner Children and Family Services, and First Baptist Church are collaborating to sponsor this event, which will include school supply distribution, vision screenings, and immunizations. All events are free.
This event would not be possible each year if it weren’t for the support of many area businesses, churches and individuals have donated their time and resources so that children may begin this school year prepared and ready to learn. For more information, call Buckner at 903-757-9383.
